Catholics in Carefree and Cave Creek are mourning the loss of Fr. Herbert Hauck. He passed away May 13 at the age of 76.
He spent roughly 40 years of priesthood in the Archdiocese of St. Louis before relocating to the Diocese of Phoenix in 2005 to be closer to family. Fr. Hauck served briefly as interim parochial administrator at St. Gabriel Parish in Cave Creek before being named parochial vicar at nearby Our Lady of Joy Parish in Carefree.

He remained in that role until his retirement in 2011, but continued to serve the parish. Fr. David Sanfilippo, in an email to the chancery, described him as a kind and patient man of God.
“His availability and pastoral concern for parishioners was deeply appreciated by those he served,” Fr. Sanfilippo wrote.
His funeral was celebrated 10 a.m. May 18 at Our Lady of Joy. He requested donations to be made in his memory to Desert Foothills Food Bank and/or the San Carlos Apache Mission School.
Catholic education was a longtime passion for Fr. Hauck. In addition to parish life, Fr. Hauck served as high school teacher and administrator at John F. Kennedy Catholic High School and St. Thomas Aquinas/Aquinas Mercy High School (now Trinity) in the Archdiocese of St. Louis. He also served as member and one-time president of the Board of Catholic Education for the Archdiocese of St. Louis.
Fr. Hauck was born April 16, 1939 in St. Louis, Missouri. He attended Cardinal Glennon College Seminary and the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. He was ordained to the priesthood for the Archdiocese of St. Louis in Rome on December 16, 1964.
