DUBUQUE, Iowa — Sister Elizabeth Welter, BVM (Prudentia), 93, died Aug. 13, 2016, at Caritas Center in Dubuque, Iowa. She was buried at Mount Carmel Cemetery, Dubuque.
In the Diocese of Phoenix, Sr. Elizabeth taught elementary school and secondary school at St. Francis Xavier School, St. Agnes School, St. Matthew School and Xavier College Preparatory, all in Phoenix.
“She was a sensitive, caring, well-prepared, excellent math teacher,” said Sr. Joan Fitzgerald who worked with Sr. Elizabeth at Xavier.
She was born in Chicago on Sept. 5, 1922, to John and Elizabeth (Ries) Welter. She entered the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Feb. 2, 1939, and professed first vows on Aug. 15, 1941, and final vows on Aug. 15, 1946.
She also taught elementary and secondary school in Los Angeles, Pasadena, Burbank and Tujunga, California. She also served in various office positions in Mission Hills and North Hollywood, California.
She was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by a sister, Mary Josephine Tanner, Palm Desert, California; nieces; and the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, with whom she shared life for 77 years.
