Bishop Olmsted led a one-hour prayer vigil Tuesday night at St. Mary’s Basilica in downtown Phoenix, the evening before the scheduled execution of Frank Atwood.
He was joined by the Sisters of the Plan of God, priests and laity as they prayed together for victims, for aggressors, and for the state to abolish use of the death penalty. In doing so, they are united with Pope Francis who has advocated for a global end to capital punishment.
