NOTE: Christ in Our Neighborhood is a parish-based program consisting of small groups that gather in the home weekly to discuss and pray through the upcoming Sunday Mass readings. Find out more at Christ in Our Neighborhood – The Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix (dphx.org)

This coming Sunday, we celebrate the Third Sunday in Ordinary Time. The question the Christ in Our Neighborhood reflection asks us is: How are you receptive to the Word of God? Are you one who filters out what you would prefer not to hear or are you open to hearing all of God’s Holy Word?

Due to our fallen human nature, we can be prone to rationalizing our behavior or filtering God’s Word. As tempting as it is to think Jesus’ command to love our enemies and do good to those who hate us is a command meant for others, it’s also meant for us. In fact, we can take Jesus at His word, and that includes the words that are, at times, uncomfortable.

When we take time each day to prayerfully ponder God’s Word, particularly the daily Gospel, we learn to hear God’s voice guiding us. Sharing insights around the Sunday Gospel and other readings is part of what Christ in Our Neighborhood is all about!

If you haven’t joined a Christ in Our Neighborhood small group yet, perhaps you are being called to start one yourself. Check out our website today to find out more: dphx.org/Christ-in-our-neighborhood.
