November is Native American Heritage Month….join the Hunger Action Ministry in exploring food insecurity and the food sovereignty movement among Arizona’s Navajo (Diné) Nation living both on reservations and in urban settings.

Learn why indigenous communities experience food insecurity. Nationwide 1 in 4 Native Americans is food insecure. In northeastern Arizona, home to the Navajo Nation, the Zuni tribe, and the Fort Apache tribe, the rate is 30 percent.

Learn about the Native American Food Sovereignty Movement and how non-ancestral foods affect native health. Efforts by native organizations and the Federal Government that support this change from corporate/market institutions controlling food distribution to people producing, distributing and consuming food and determining their own policies of food production and distribution. L

Learn how food banks are supporting the food sovereignty movement.

Our keynote speaker is Wendy Weston. She was born and raised in the Four Corners area of the Navajo Nation in the community of T’iisNazbas. She attended Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona for both under grad and graduate studies and worked at the Heard Museum for more than two decades as Public Programs Director and Director of American Indian Relations.

A strong supporter of Native cultural and artistic expression, Weston’s work has helped to increase the awareness of and respect for Native lifeways. Weston resides in Tempe, Arizona and works for Cook Native American Ministries Foundation, that serves American Indian communities across the country.

Also speaking is Isabel Loga, Community Programs Manager at the Arizona Food Bank Network. She is an Arizona local and has lived here most of her life. She has worked with food banks for 3 years in the states of Arizona and Washington. Currently, Isabel works to network resources and create sustainable solutions to hunger for marginalized communities in Arizona, including native americans.
