The Simbang Gabi is a nine-day novena Masses of Advent to prepare us for the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ and to honor our Blessed Mother Mary. It is a very popular Catholic tradition in the Philippines started by the Spanish missionaries. Simbang Gabi novena Masses in the Philippines were celebrated at dawn, when the roosters crow, hence the name Misa de Gallo came about. It was one of the missionaries way to instill the faith while accommodating Filipino customs. Here in the Diocese of Phoenix, there are 7 parishes celebrating Simbang Gabi from December 15-23 in the evening.
