Bishop Dolan launches historic seven-year pastoral plan on evangelization
Almost 500 years ago, a poor peasant wearing a simple cloak came face-to-face with a heavenly reality in the hills of Mexico – changing the lives of millions of people forever. When Juan Diego, a native Aztec and Christian convert, set out for catechism class one morning in December, he heard a voice calling him by name. He climbed the nearby Tepeyac hill and encountered the most beautiful woman he had ever seen – Our Lady of Guadalupe.
Arizona Catholic Bishops statement on election results and upcoming Year of Hope
We, the Catholic Bishops of Arizona, wish to congratulate those recently elected officials who have been chosen by the people for public office. We also wish to thank all those who served as candidates. Public service is a noble calling and at the very heart of our democracy and citizenship. With the conclusion of the recent elections, it is important to remember that we must always put our faith in God before all else and maintain a spirit of hope. While harmful Arizona ballot propositions relating to abortion and immigration were unfortunately approved by voters this November, we need to be steadfast in our commitment to life and remain confident in God’s love.
Kino Catechetical Institute helps Catholics, future deacons, deepen faith in God
Ted Ebner, coordinator of prison ministry for the Diocese of Phoenix, has words of advice for any adult interested in deepening their faith through Kino Catechetical Institute. “If you’re thinking about doing Kino, just sign up for it, because it’s a win, win, win,” Ebner said. “A win for you, a win for your journey and a win for your family.” After years of working in the insurance business, Ebner said he felt a tug on his heart for deeper formation in his Catholic faith. A friend at his parish, Ascension in Fountain Hills, Ariz., is a Kino graduate and encouraged him to take the plunge.
Indifference kills; be signs of hope, pope tells young people
VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Young people must reject indifference and embrace their role as a generation of hope and unity to build a better future for the world, Pope Francis said. Developing a sense of fraternity is "the best answer we can offer to the conflicts and indifference that kill, because indifference kills," the pope told a meeting of young Catholics from around the Mediterranean.
Be pilgrims, not tourists in life, pope tells young people
VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- To fully experience love and hope, young people must approach the journey of life as pilgrims and not just sightseers seeking the perfect selfie, Pope Francis said. "Do not be like superficial sightseers, blind to the beauty around you, never discovering the meaning of the roads you take, interested only in a few fleeting moments to capture in a selfie. Tourists do this," the pope said in a message to young people ahead of the local celebrations of World Youth Day Nov. 24.
Rebel from evil by receiving Communion, pope tells Eucharistic congress
VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Simple gestures of piety, such as receiving Communion, sow harmony among humanity and can be acts of rebellion against evil, Pope Francis said. In a video message to the International Eucharistic Congress in Quito, Ecuador, released by the Vatican Sept. 8, the pope highlighted the power of the Eucharist through the story of German Trinitarian Sister Angela Autsch, who was imprisoned by the Nazis and sent to Auschwitz where she died in 1944.
Hundreds experience belonging through Bishop Dolan’s small faith community program
As Jean Loudenslagel filled a pitcher with fresh homemade lemonade, she looked around at those who filled her dining room table and smiled. The diverse group of believers, from the 30-year-old young professionals to the 80-year-old widows and widowers, laughed and connected with ease as they shared a meal together. Loudenslagel never could have imagined that these fellow parishioners, who had been strangers six weeks prior, would become like family. And it all started with a stirring from the Holy Spirit and a simple invitation.

National Eucharistic Congress challenges attendees to evangelize, ‘go out’
INDIANAPOLIS - - A five-day, epic gathering of Catholics at the National Eucharistic Congress ended July 21, but the mission continues. “Let us go and proclaim Jesus zealously and joyfully for the life of the world!” Cardinal Luis Tagle, the papal envoy, told the 60,000 people from across the U.S. packed into Lucas Oil Stadium for the closing Mass. “Go and share Jesus’ tender love with the weary, the hungry and the suffering,” Cardinal Tagle told the crowd.
